I learned Odoo back when it was still OpenERP, around 2013, when the documentation was a single PDF laid out like a brochure, when Odoo had barely a handful of modules and was Open Source and nothing else. From the start I loved playing with whatever was within reach: tweaking views, building my first POS synchronizer between computers so that a single register could charge everyone's orders. Basically, I have always liked taking the tools I have one level past where they ship. That is the intent underneath this book: to squeeze Odoo and get more out of it than what comes in the box.
With that out of the way, let me tell you a bit more about myself. I have been working with Odoo for over a decade. I started at Poiesis Consulting, in Bolivia, one of the best implementation companies in the country. Then that same restlessness I have never quite shaken pushed me into freelancing, and getting to know other cultures, other companies, and other ways of working opened up my head and led me to do far more than I would have imagined. For these last two years, through Simplify IT S.R.L., my work has centered on making Odoo do what businesses actually need it to do — implementations, migrations, custom modules, integrations with tax authorities and marketplaces across Bolivia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Most of that work happens below the surface: models, views, business logic, the plumbing that keeps an ERP honest. OWL was, for a long time, something I used without truly seeing.
That changed the day a client's upgrade from an older Odoo version broke every custom widget we had built for them. The old code did not just need patching — it needed rethinking. Going through that migration line by line, I found myself asking questions I had quietly avoided for years: Why does OWL exist at all, when Odoo could have used React or Vue like everyone else? What actually changed between OWL 1.0 and 2.0, and why did it matter enough to justify starting over instead of patching forward? What is the mental model I am supposed to have, instead of the one I accidentally built by copy-pasting from existing addons?
This book is the resource I wished existed when I was asking those questions.
It is written from the perspective of a working Odoo consultant, not a framework author. I am not going to pretend OWL is the only reasonable choice, or that every design decision in it is beyond question — I will tell you why the choices were made, what trade-offs they carry, and where they show up in the code you write every day. My goal is for you to stop treating OWL as "the way Odoo happens to do frontend" and start treating it as a tool you understand well enough to use with intention, debug with confidence, and occasionally disagree with.
Who This Book Is For
If you build custom addons, portal pages, or backend extensions for Odoo — whether you come from a Python background reaching into the frontend, or a JavaScript background trying to make sense of Odoo's conventions — this book is for you. I assume you can read JavaScript and that you have opened an Odoo addon's static/src folder before, even if it intimidated you. I do not assume you already know what a reactive proxy is, or why Odoo abandoned QWeb-only rendering, or what "OWL" even stands for the first time you hear it.
How to Use This Book
Each chapter builds on assumptions from the ones before it, but I have tried to make the early chapters — the "why" before the "how" — valuable even if you skip straight to a later chapter for a specific answer. Along the way you will find Reflection Questions and Common Pitfalls sections drawn directly from real project work, not hypothetical edge cases. When something broke a client's production instance, or cost me an afternoon I did not have to spare, you will find it here, explained plainly enough that it does not cost you the same afternoon.
A last note: this is not official Odoo documentation, and I have no affiliation with Odoo S.A. beyond being, like you, someone who has to make their framework work in the real world. Where my explanations diverge from or simplify the official source, that is a deliberate choice in service of a working mental model — not a claim to greater authority than the framework's own code.
A Note on How This Book Came Together
This book is built on my own experience and everything I learned along the way — but it was refined and sharpened with the help of Claude, from Anthropic.
